The Flying Falcons BookClub-Summer 2010 Print

Our literature program has three basic goals:

1. To strengthen your child's reading skills.
2. To expand your student's knowledge of authors, illustrators and cultures, both historic and current.
3. To nurture a life-long love of learning and reading.

All Flying Falcons members will read, or have read to them a designated number of books during the summer months. All students who accomplish these requirements (or exceed them) will be distinguished as "Full-Fledged" members, and they will receive recognition from their teacher, recognition on their report card, a certificate from the Head-of-School, and a free Laser Tag session at Luigi's Pizza and Fun Center in Aurora, along with game-room credits and food coupons.

Students who accomplish at least half of the listed requirements will be distinguished as "Fledgling" members, and they will receive $5 in game-room credits and reduced price food and Laser Tag at Luigi's.

Students who achieve "Full-Fledged" membership status every year they attend Faith Christian Academy will have their names engraved on a plaque that will be displayed in the Academy's "Hall of Fame." In addition, all "Full-Fledged" and "Fledgling" members will have their name and photo placed in a permanent "Flying Falcons" scrapbook that will be displayed in the trophy case.

The book requirements, report log sheets and reading lists for each grade can be downloaded and printed from the links at the bottom of this article.  The report log sheets are to be turned in to the student's homeroom teacher on the first day of school in September

Parents, your responsibility is to "guide" the summer reading.   After your student finishes a book, help him or her document the required information in the logbook and then have your student "retell" the story back to you in their own words. Keep it lighthearted and fun! There are books on the list that will take you to the far corners of the earth, or on the high seas, or even to far off galaxies! Enjoy the travels, sights, sounds and smells of places you may never be able to visit other than in your imagination!

Book Requirement by Grade

1st and 2nd grades = 12 books
3rd and 4th grades = 10 books
5th and 6th grades =  8 books
7th and 8th grades =  8 books
